How Do We Do It? // Balancing Work & Family

We’ve Seen Your Questions

Last year, Ami and I attended a TedX event in Bismarck, North Dakota, and spoke on our experience building a YouTube career and finding how to maneuver through the changes that it brought to our lives. As the kids get older and our brand is evolving, I wanted to go in more depth about how we make it all work. Life has changed so much in the past few months and as we have stated before, we are slowly shifting our brand to encompass the whole family. So, here we go.

A Rocky Start

When we first realized that we could make a career out of social media, we threw ourselves into it and adjusted to the new normal. For the first year, we were pushing ourselves to the breaking point and we didn’t organize as we should have. While the content was going up, our family life was struggling. We didn’t act like a family, we acted like a business. When we reached a point when our marriage was suffering the consequences of all of the work, Ami and I sat down and realized that something had to change. We weren’t communicating with each other or our kids. We were all trying to do the same job and ultimately, even as a business plan, it didn’t function well at all.

Communication is Key

That’s when we began to talk to each other and the kids about what we really wanted to accomplish here. Did we just want to put out silly videos each week or did we want to make something that we were proud of? We decided that we wanted to build a community and use our platform to promote positivity. That’s exactly what we did. We changed our approach to how we created content. We wanted the girls, especially, involved in the decision-making process. We wanted them to have a say in what kind of content they were putting out there. And no worries, when Jersey is a little older and understands the process a little more, he will get more input. But trust me, he already knows how to share his opinion.

Family First, Always

The other super important change we made is that we made sure that actual family time came first. Making videos comes second. if we need to take some family time, then we stop and spend time together. We get the work done, but that isn’t all that we do. We also take time for ourselves. Ami and I take turns getting out away from the kids and the business for a little bit when we need to. This is important for our relationship so that we aren’t feeling the stress of it all, all the time.

We Want You To Join Us

t’s the little changes like these that really make our work/life balance work. As we grow into a more family-centered brand, we want to focus on bringing you along on the very real ride that our family goes on. We want to be transparent and genuine as we go forward. We also, want to hear from you! what kind of content do you want to see? What questions do you have for us? Reach out and let us know!

I definitely cried when I returned home from dropping off and seeing her off at the airport. It was very difficult for me. She was everything to me and my children but had to let her go back home to daddy. She stayed one full year with us.
